Vasectomy Specialists

A vasectomy is a minor outpatient procedure that provides permanent contraception for men. It is one of the most common urological procedures performed in the United States.

About Vasectomy

Vasectomy involves cutting or blocking the vas deferens to prevent sperm from being released during ejaculation. The procedure takes 15–30 minutes under local anesthesia and has a success rate exceeding 99.9%. It does not affect testosterone levels, sexual function, or the ability to ejaculate.

Signs & Symptoms

  • Desire for permanent contraception

Treatment Options

  • Conventional vasectomy (incision)
  • No-scalpel vasectomy (NSV)
  • Vasectomy reversal (vasovasostomy) — for those seeking fertility restoration

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a vasectomy hurt?

The procedure is performed under local anesthesia. Most men feel pressure or mild discomfort during the injection, then little to no pain. Soreness and swelling lasting 2–5 days after the procedure is typical and manageable with ice and over-the-counter pain relievers.

How soon after a vasectomy am I sterile?

Not immediately. Sperm can remain in the reproductive tract for several months. Your urologist will order a semen analysis (typically 8–16 weeks post-procedure) to confirm zero sperm before you can rely on it for contraception.

Is a vasectomy reversible?

Vasectomy reversal is possible but not guaranteed. Success rates decline with time since the original vasectomy. A vasectomy should be considered permanent.
