How is male infertility evaluated?
Evaluation starts with a semen analysis measuring sperm count, motility, and morphology. If abnormal, a urologist performs a physical exam, hormone panel, and sometimes genetic testing or testicular biopsy to identify the cause.
Can a varicocele cause infertility?
Yes. A varicocele is an enlargement of the veins within the scrotum that raises testicular temperature and impairs sperm production. Varicoceles are found in 40% of infertile men. Surgical repair improves sperm parameters in most cases.
What is azoospermia, and is it treatable?
Azoospermia is the complete absence of sperm in the ejaculate. Obstructive azoospermia is often correctable surgically. Non-obstructive azoospermia may still allow sperm retrieval for IVF/ICSI through micro-TESE.
